Win Nirvana Unplugged DVDs!15 Nov 2007

Kurtcrop It’s the connoisseur’s Nirvana performance, the sometimes excruciatingly intimate show they performed for MTV Unplugged on November 18, 1993, and it’s shortly to be available on DVD. And because we’re nice like that, we have 10 copies to give away.

Click MORE for an appreciation, and a chance to win…

Released in November 1994, seven months after the death of Kurt Cobain, the Unplugged In New York album became an instant monument to the wasted potential of the Nirvana frontman, an indication of the breadth of his talent and the possibilities for his music. The CD version went platinum, and won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Here’s how MOJO’s Martin Aston reassessed it, when it was deemed the ninth best album of MOJO’s lifetime in 2006 (Mojo 150).

“Brittle and heart bruised, Nirvana’s songs were stripped bare and scratched out on an acoustic guitar. The results were startling: punk thrash replaced with tender, distorted Americana and unexpected cover versions (Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World). Elsewhere, On A Plain's abrasive scrawl became fragile bluegrass, though a pleading cover of Leadbelly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night? remains this session’s disturbing masterpiece - Kurt Cobain’s howl vocalising a despair previously relieved through grunge catharsis.”

The full Unplugged In New York DVD (Polydor) is set for release on November 19th 2007 and features the complete unedited 66-minute concert in both Dolby Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound, including stage patter and two songs not aired on the original 44-minute broadcast: Oh Me and Something In The Way.

Also included is previously unreleased rehearsal footage of Come As You Are, Polly and Pennyroyal Tea and documentary footage including interviews with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

Here’s a slightly lower-fi version of Where Did You Sleep Last Night? for a memory-jogger

To be in the running for one of 10 copies, mail Editor@mojo4music.com, before November 26, with the answer to the following question... Additional musicians on the Unplugged date included brothers Cris and Curt Kirkwood, but which ’80s/’90s band did they lead?

a) Meat Whiplash
b) Master Of Puppets
c) Meat Puppets

Don’t forget to include your name, address and a contact number if you want one of these...

WIN SHERYL CROW BEST-OFS!12 Nov 2007

Sherylcrop Hits And Rarities are promised and Hits And Rarities are what you get in the Shery Crow best-of that hits the shelves this week. The rocky ride of the former Wacko Jacko backing voxtress is perfectly encapsulated in this comprehensive compilation, where the heartworn country-rock of her debut Tuesday Night Music Club jostles with the spooky-slick pop of her self-titled follow-up. She never quite went super-massive, and why the heck not?

Click MORE for a chance to win a copy...

Crow’s high-profile collaborators – Sting, the Stones, Dylan, Willie Nelson – and nine (count 'em) grammies testifies to widespread admiration, and the carcrash lovelife (Clapton was a brief beau – or was he? – Sheryl wasn’t saying) cast a shadow that’s fed into complex and increasingly discomfiting songs. And while her more recent releases haven’t emulated the commercial peak of the ’90s, they certainly haven’t lacked for cracking tracks, as C'mon C'mon’s Soak Up The Sun and Wildflower’s title track – both here – go to show. She spent 2006 battling, then overcoming breast cancer, and splitting with cycling star Lance Armstrong. Reports suggest we can expect another full Sheryl Crow album, entitled Detours, in February. You can hear a taste of its lead-off track, the eco-centric Shine Over Babylon, here...

To win one of ten copies of the album, mail Editor@mojo4music.com with your answer to the following question.... In 1998, Crow inducted which band into the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame?

a) Fleetwood Mac
b) The Rolling Stones
c) Half Man Half Biscuit

Get your emails in before November 20, 2007 and you’re in with a shot. Don’t forget to include your full name, address and a contact number.

WIN HENDRIX’S MONTEREY AWE-FEST AND HD DVD PLAYER!25 Oct 2007

Hendrixcrop It was one of the definitive musical performances of the ’60s, the moment when the rock festival was born, and in retrospect, still one of the top 5 rock shows ever. Now, the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s set gets its just desserts, with the ultimate visual package now on the shelves. Enter our competition and one winner will score a copy of the definitive edition, plus a Toshiba HD DVD machine to play it on.

Click MORE for competition details…

THE BACK STORY!

Hendrix’s Monterey show cemented his legend and re-exported him back to his homeland after a 1966-67 spent setting fire to swinging London under the wing of Animals manager Chas Chandler. By the time he hit the stage at Monterey on June 18, 1967, he had developed a fearsome reputation, and there was much anxiety around following such an incendiary performer.

“I felt he was a master, a genius,” Pete Townshend told MOJO earlier this year. “I was not prepared to follow him, not because I was afraid to follow him but because in my old-fashioned showbiz mind the best artists go on latest in the set. In the end we tossed for it, and Jimi lost. We went on first, he then announced that if we preceded him, and set the crowd alight with our destruction act, he too would set them alight. So the crowd got two mind-f**king sets.”

By the show’s end, Hendrix had won America and put the wind good and proper up the festival headliners The Mamas & The Papas.

“I peer my head out to the stage,” recalled Papa Denny Doherty, “over the drums that they're using, and Hendrix is lighting his fucking guitar on fire! And this guy comes up and says, 'Okay, you're on!' 'Huh? We gotta follow this!?'”

THE PACKAGE!

This special edition DVD features all of the existing film footage from the concert, newly transferred to high-definition specs from the original 16mm, while the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo mixes are by Eddie Kramer, Hendrix’s original recording engineer. In addition, there are two documentary films – American Landing, assessing Hendrix’s impact on the US; plus Music, Love & Flowers, a behind-the-scenes look at the Monterey festival, featuring organiser Lou Adler – and a chance to see the earliest known film and sound recordings of the Experience in concert from February 25, 1967 in Chelmsford, England.

This evening (from 7.45) a live event featuring a one-hour edit of the show, followed by an all-star tribute concert – happening live at London’s Hippodrome – will be simulcast into 20 VUE cinemas across the UK. The band’s line-up stars former Hendrix sidemen Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, augmented by blues-rock guitarist Gary Moore (filling some daunting shoes), his long-time bass player Dave Bronze, plus Primal Scream drummer Darrin Mooney. To find out about participating VUE cinemas, and for last-minute ticket requests, go here.
