Released in November 1994, seven months after the death of Kurt Cobain, the Unplugged In New York album became an instant monument to the wasted potential of the Nirvana frontman, an indication of the breadth of his talent and the possibilities for his music. The CD version went platinum, and won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

Here’s how MOJO’s Martin Aston reassessed it, when it was deemed the ninth best album of MOJO’s lifetime in 2006 (Mojo 150).

“Brittle and heart bruised, Nirvana’s songs were stripped bare and scratched out on an acoustic guitar. The results were startling: punk thrash replaced with tender, distorted Americana and unexpected cover versions (Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World). Elsewhere, On A Plain's abrasive scrawl became fragile bluegrass, though a pleading cover of Leadbelly’s Where Did You Sleep Last Night? remains this session’s disturbing masterpiece - Kurt Cobain’s howl vocalising a despair previously relieved through grunge catharsis.”

The full Unplugged In New York DVD (Polydor) is set for release on November 19th 2007 and features the complete unedited 66-minute concert in both Dolby Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound, including stage patter and two songs not aired on the original 44-minute broadcast: Oh Me and Something In The Way.

Also included is previously unreleased rehearsal footage of Come As You Are, Polly and Pennyroyal Tea and documentary footage including interviews with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic.

Here’s a slightly lower-fi version of Where Did You Sleep Last Night? for a memory-jogger
