Ryancrop Spare a thought for troubled country-rocker Ryan Adams. Turning up at yesterday’s Q Awards in London to pick up a Merit Award, he had a bit of a funny turn and declared himself unfit to take the stage, obliging harmonizing sibling rockers Magic Numbers to pick it up in his name.

Arriving in good order, the fragile songsmith, whose travails with alcohol, drugs and celebrity girlfriends (Winona Ryder, Parker Posey et al), are said to be behind him, pronounced himself freaked out almost immediately. He retired to a suite in the awards venue, Mayfair’s Grosvenor House hotel, where a certain amount of jollying up and Diet Coke appeared to do a restorative job, and he agreed to take his seat at a table downstairs.

However, soon after the beginning of the ceremony, he was seen making a dash for the exit with his girlfriend, claiming to be overwhelmed by the occasion.

Whether or not it was the proximity of his avowed idol, ex-Smith Johnny Marr, Adams wasn’t saying.

Also present, though not seen to be putting the frighteners on Adams in the slightest, were Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Ian Brown, Damon Albarn, Peter Hook – making a stirring speech in memory of late Factory Records head Tony Wilson, Billy Bragg, The Verve, Kate Nash, Muse and The Stereophonics.

Amy Winehouse – the winner of Q magazine’s album of the year – was a no-show, crying off the morning of the ceremony. Arctic Monkeys, on the other hand, were delighted to be presented their Best Act In The World Today gong by Dame Shirley Bassey, whose Diamonds Are Forever they emulated in their Friday night headline set at Glastonbury this year.

Q magazine is MOJO’s sister publication. We share a floor, but as the older, better-selling magazine their office is nearer to the toilet.
